Proposal

Proposal: The Impact and Sacrifices of the 2004 Tsunami in Sri Lanka

My proposal is based on the events of the deadly 2004 Tsunami. This natural disaster killing more than two hundred and thirty thousand people across 14 different countries was believed to be the deadliest tsunami in history. Many will acknowledge the power of it but cannot visualise or emphasise the reality of someone who witnessed it or someone who lost many close ones. This proposal aims to show a perspective of how it really feels to be in the moment of such a horrifying tragical event and how the mind could be disturbed during and after the fast paced disaster.

My interviewee is my father, Gnanasekaram Arulselvam who is from Northern East, Sri Lanka where mass death is nothing new due to war however this interview focusses on how it felt for someone to see something so unexpected and especially so new to that country. Many of us will fear the waves at the beach even if you are a great swimmer, I am a competitive swimmer finalist / Part-Time RLSS NPLQ Lifeguard (inspired from my father’s Scuba Diving background). I fear the sea because I know you cannot fight nature and it can surprise you. I was 5 years old when I found out about Tsunami and I was in secondary school when I realised how deeply scary that will be to witness.

I really wanted to find out more regarding this terrifying event as I was very young old when this event happened and we all could not hear from my father in a while which led to us assuming he passed away. It was always hard to understand how he managed to survive that monster especially for someone living along the coast.

It is surprising how much the mind can take at a shocking moment, and this interview will walk steps of life after losing his loved one(s).

In addition I would like to communicate the reality of Genocide of Tamils within Sri Lanka metaphorically as this is a personal point of attention and also my contributors main topic beside Tsunami.

This focus is not just on Sri Lankans but all the other countries which were suffering and hopeless at the time due to something so unstoppable. It has been 15 years since the terrifying disaster on Boxing day killed so many lives and happiness, I would like to make a film on the serious impact of the 2004 Tsunami as a dedication to all the ones that weren’t fortunate enough and to the families that lost their loved ones. So many people do not understand what a Tsunami is or do not understand how unbelievable its nature is and this film will surprise many into understanding what it is , how many sacrifices it involved, what sort of destruction was visible, what damages a person may feel after losing a loved one.
